Why Bother with Search Engine Optimisation?

Over half the world's population now has access to the Web. Nearly 90% of them find websites through Search Engines. Search Engines now drive more than half of all online purchases. There are over 22 billion web pages fighting for the best search position. There are billions of other pages not even listed in any search engine. It follows that Search Engine Optimisation should not be taken lightly.

There are thousands of search engines around but really you can count the top 95% of all search engines on one hand. All search engines have a different formula for ranking their content, although generally doing something that is good for one generally is also good for the others.

One of the most complicated search engine algorithms is that of Google, this is what makes Google so good for finding what you want and is the basis for their huge success. There are a number of ways to get traffic to your site, but by far the best methods from a return on investment point of view is a good organic search engine ranking. By organic we mean natural main page ranking.

There are other methods to appear high up on search engines, for example paying to do so, like Google’s Cost per Click (CPC) advertising. Fisheye have over 4 years experience with Google’s cost per click campaigns, and have managed campaigns worth over £100,000 per annum. We can help you set up a CPC account, help you choose keywords, report statistics and manage your campaign.

Optimising a Website for High Page Rankings

What’s the secret for getting a good page position on Google? Well in short, there is no single solution for achieving this. People write books on this subject and the debate goes on and evolves as search engine ranking algorithms get increasingly complex.

Fisheye are following this evolution closely and are continually adjusting our strategy to meet the search engine requirements.

You may find reports of website owners or Search Engine Optimisation companies refining sites to go straight up to the top, well although this may be possible often they use rogue techniques which often result in an actual exclusion by search engines sooner or later. These Charlatans techniques should be avoided. Fortunately for the surfer the only real way to get a good search engine ranking is by making a really great website. There are a number of techniques we use to obtain a high search engine ranking and we don’t mind sharing these with you.

Meta tags & Optimisation :

Meta tags are located in the HTML code in your site and are not visible on your website, but are visible to search engine spiders. These spiders do not see your site graphically as a human does; they see just in the text content and code behind the scenes.

The 3 most important tags are Meta Title (as displayed in the top of your browser window. Meta Description – a brief description of your web page and Meta Keywords a list of keywords that are important to this page.

The content of these Meta Tags is very important, and as such we will ask you to get involved in writing them, with advice from us you should be able to really assist your page positioning. Here are some of our top tips:

• Use 3-4 keywords or 2-3 keyword phrases in the Title Tag - the most critical tag for rankings. The words farthest to the left have more weight. You might want to move the company name to the end, unless it includes targeted keywords.

• Don't include a keyword or key phrase in your Title Tag and meta tags that is not present on that page. Keywords should reinforce what is on the page, not define it - you run the risk of being penalised for Spam if you include loads of words that do not appear on the page themselves.

• Title Tags should not be over 70 characters long (otherwise they won't appear in the title bar in the browser and search engine spiders will also ignore them).

• Create keyword combinations specific to each page on your site based on the page text. Think in terms of themes or subcategories. Example, if you have a garden e-commerce site, for the bulbs page use specific keywords like: autumn bulbs supplier, tulip bulbs, flowering bulbs.

• Don't stuff keywords into your tags. More is not always better and can get you banned.

• Don't use the same word more than 3 times in the keyword meta tag, and avoid using the same word consecutively. By omitting commas, you can create more combinations and avoid overusing the same words.

• Don't target generic, one-word keywords with extreme competition, for example, gardens or gardening.

• Don't make your title tag one long string of keywords. Make it a readable sentence or phrase.

Using a site map

It is very useful to have a sitemap always available to visitors to your site. The sitemap will display all your categories and subcategories on one page with links through to all the category and subcategory pages and all the products. It is very good for the following reason:

It provides visitors a quick easy reference to all the pages in your site and so aids easy navigation.

Search Engine Spiders

Search Engine Spiders are used to crawl the web and gather information on web pages. These spiders will visit your site regularly (usually at least once a month). They will crawl through your site starting with the home page and following any "visible" links to other pages. It is important to check that your site will provide a guaranteed route to search engine spiders when indexing your site.

You can check this on Google my typing in the search box “site:www.mycompany.com” The pages displayed will be the ones which Google has managed to index, if it only gets as far as your home page then there is a problem. If you have just launched your site sometimes Google will only index the homepage first and then come back a later date, you should wait up to 2 months before you start to worry.

Keyword Use

Use the keyword once in title, once in meta description tag, once in a heading, once in the url, once in bold, once in italic, once high on the page.

Cross Linking

All pages should be linked to more than one other page on your site, and not more than 3 levels deep from root.

Link to on topic quality content across your site. If a page is about food, then make sure it links it to the apples and veggies page. Specifically with Google, on topic cross linking is very important for sharing your page rank value across your site. You do NOT want an "all star" page that out performs the rest of your site. You want 50 pages that produce 1 referral each a day and do NOT want 1 page that produces 50 referrals a day. If you do find one page that drastically out produces the rest of the site with Google, you need to off load some of that page rank value to other pages by cross linking heavily. It's the old share the wealth thing.

Content

Lots of text breaks - short sentences - lots of dashes - something that reads quickly. Use headers, and bold standout text liberally on your pages as logical separators. Text content should out weigh html content.

Use good sentences and spell check it. Spell checking is becoming important as search engines are moving to auto correction during searches.

Google loves content, lots of quality content. Broad based over a wide range of keywords. That will get you good placement under a wide range of keywords, generate reciprocal links, and overall position your site to stand on it's own two feet.

Link with Other Websites

From every page, if possible, link to one or two high ranking sites under that particular keyword. Use your keyword in the link text (this is ultra important).

When you receive requests for links, check the site out before linking back with them. Check them through Google and their page rank value. Look for directory listings. Don't link back to junk just because they asked. Make sure it is a site similar to yours and on topic.

Referrals

After 30-60 days you will start to see a few referrals from places you've gotten listed. Look for the keywords people are using. See any bizarre combinations? Why are people using those to find your site? If there is something you have over looked, then build a page around that topic. Retro engineer your site to feed the search engine what it wants.

If your site is about "oranges", but your referrals are all about "orange citrus fruit", then you can get busy building articles around "citrus" and "fruit" instead of the generic "oranges".

The search engines will tell you exactly what they want to be fed - listen closely, there is gold in referral logs, it's just a matter of panning for it.

Image alt tags

Do use descriptive short alt tags for your images - many search engines will use them (which adds to your keywords). Each search engine has different criteria for indexing your site (but, all don't mind the alt tags and some use them).
